May Beauty Favourites

Here are a few of my beauty favourites this month. I’ve been trying to buy more natural products because I think my skin prefers it. Of course it is a lot better fore the environment too. What are your monthly favourites?

Seventeen Instant Glow Tan Cream Bronzer

I bought this during my discounted Seventeen makeup haul – view my post here. This is a cream bronzer housed in a pan style container. Because of this I can apply it with a Beauty Blender instead of other cream bronzers I’ve had in the past that are in stick form. The consistency is light and blends easily. The colour is great for me and gives a natural tanned look. I would recommend seeing if your local Boots is selling off old Seventeen branded products as this is only £1.50.

Origins Drink Up 10 Minute Mask

I’ve been using this mask for about a year now but more so in the past month when doing my at home facial – read my post here. It’s a hydrating mask that works quickly. The scent is fruity and refreshing. It leaves the skin soft and the product is natural (not vegan as it contains beeswax and honey).

Lanolips 101 Ointment

I’ve been using this lip balm for the past couple of months now. Before I used to religiously buy the Nuxe Rêve de Miel Lip Balm but I couldn’t buy it locally anymore and happened to see this for sale. The product works just as well. It’s a lot more convenient too because it is in a squeezy tube. The balm can become quite solid in cold conditions so sometimes you have to warm it up by massaging the tube to get the product out. I think the branding is quite cute, I like to see it on my bedside table. The actual product is made from a natural wax that is produced by woollen animals to keep their wool protected. The balm is therefore natural and cruelty free.

Nuxe Nuxellence Éclat Radiance Anti-Ageing Care

I bought this from a small sale I saw in Boots, I think I must have got it for around £5. Only looking it up now for this review do I see that it’s about £30-40 normally – what a discount! I’ve used this cream everyday. The smell is really nice, the packaging and scent reminds me faintly of parma violets. The weight of the cream is light and pleasant to use, it’s made from 90% natural ingredients. I use it in the morning and it can be used alone or as well as moisturiser. It’s designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and smooth the skin.

Tosowoong Black Sugar Facial Scrub

This is a great exfoliator for my skin. I don’t feel like the sugar is too rough on my skin and I like to rub it on my face until it dissolves into a oily residue which feels hydrating. The smell is just like what you’d expect from a sugar scrub and leaves the skin lovely and soft.

Buy it here or similar here.

Nature Love Natural Deodorant Stick in Cucumber Aloe

I have been purchasing and testing natural deodorants for a few years now and this so far is the best I’ve tried. I picked it up in TK Maxx so it could be worth looking there for it as I can’t find many sellers online. It’s 100% natural and works really well. More recently in the summer months I have noticed it not being as foolproof but definitely in less humid weather it prevents the majority of body odour. I would give this a go if you are looking to try natural deodorants.

Buy it in Tk Maxx.

Pony Effect Everlasting Cushion Foundation

I feel like I’ve mentioned this so many times on my blog but this cushion foundation is the one I’ve been using the most this month. The coverage is really great and it has good longevity. I think the packaging is sleek and really functional for taking on holiday and even touching up throughout the day. Read my longer review here.

At Home Hydrating Facial

I’ve wanted to have a facial in the past few weeks but decided to try and do it at home replicating what I’ve had done in the past. Although I don’t have the same massage techniques as a qualified professional, I feel that I could quite easily do a similar process. This way I can use the products I like and save the money I would have spent. This is the routine I have been implementing and it’s been working well so far, let me know if you have any tips.

Makeup Removal

I will often start by removing the bulk of my makeup usually with a facial wipe. Sometimes I will use a facial oil if I am not using waterproof mascara. The oil is great for also using a massage technique that can help circulation because of the slip is creates on the skin.

The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil 200ml
Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Oil with Coconut and Argan Oils 177ml
DHC Deep Cleansing Oil 200ml
Simple Facial Cleansing Wipes – Pack of 6
Facial Massage Jade Roller
Méthode Jeanne Piaubert Stimuloval Roller
The Body Shop Wooden Handle Facial Massager

Cleanse

I like to do a second cleanse to ensure all the makeup is off my skin. My favourite is a hot cloth cleanser that you steam off. This opens the pores and makes the skin extremely soft because it is not stripping like a gel-type cleanser. I like to use muslin cloths, the texture provides some exfoliation too.

Ren Rosa Centifolia Hot Cloth Cleanser
Burt’s Bees Soap Bark and Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream 170g
Pai Skincare Organic Camellia and Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser 200 ml
MuslinZ Baby Muslin Squares (Pack of 6, White)

Exfoliation

To exfoliate I love using a brown sugar scrub. They smell amazing and once you’ve dissolved the sugar particles by gently buffing the skin it produces an oily residue that is hydrating and luxurious feeling. You can also do a facial massage at this stage.

Skinfood Skin Food Black Sugar Perfect Scrub Foam
Majestic Pure Brown Sugar Scrub 12 oz
Oatmeal & Almond Face Scrub with Crushed Walnut Shells – Organic, 100% Natural

Masking

I like to then use a mask. Depending on my concern I might use a sheet mask if I want a lot of hydration or on a regular day I will just use a relatively natural mask. You can use a clay based one for blemishes but they can be quite drying and may make the previous steps of the facial void because we are working towards building moisture.

TONYMOLY Pureness 100 Mask Sheet (Variety Set – 10 Sheets)
Garnier Moisture Bomb Pomegranate Hydrating Face Sheet Mask
Origins Drink Up 10 Minute Mask 100ml
Fresh Vitamin Nectar Vibrancy-Boosting Face Mask To Go 30ml

Oil

After removing the face mask I immediately like to use a facial oil in order to retain as much hydration as possible. I love rosehip oil because of its healing properties but the smell is not to everyones taste. There are a lot of other similar plant-based oils that are worth considering.

100% Pure Rosehip Oil 60ml
Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil 30ml
BeBarefaced Vitamin E Face Oil – Facial Vitamin C Night Serum With Hyaluronic Acid

Moisturiser + Eye Cream

The final step is moisturiser. I like to use a relatively thick one overnight. Eye cream is also an important step and you can tailor this to whatever concerns you have like dark circles or anti-aging.

Embryolisse Concentrated Milk Cream 75ml
Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream 60ml
Liz Earle Skin Repair Moisturiser
Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado 15ml

K-Beauty Shopping List

Dear, Klairs – Illuminating Supple Blemish Cream SPF40 PA++

This is a best selling BB cream in Korea. I had a free sample and was really impressed by it. It has good coverage and feels just like moisturiser when you apply it. It has colour correcting qualities and is also cruelty free.

kb2.png

By Wishtrend – Vitamin 75 Maximizing Cream

I also had a free sample of this and it’s like a gel consistency. I think this would be good for morning when I don’t want a thick cream. I think gel creams can be quite hydrating which was the impression I got from my sample.

kb3.png

Holika Holika – Piece Matching Nails Lacquer

I’ve not really heard anything about these but I liked the colours especially the light blue.

kb1.png

COSRX – Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser

This is supposed to be good and it’s quite affordable. It is described as a morning gel cleanser, possibly comparable with the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. I’ve been looking into gel cleansers because I want something light and refreshing in the morning and not too stripping.

kb4.png

The Face Shop – Rice Water Bright Light Cleansing Oil

In reviews this cleansing oil apparently works really well. Having run out of my The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil I am in need of a new one (The Body Shop one has awful packaging). I had a sample of the DHC Cleansing Oil but because it is olive oil based I wondered why it was so expensive. To me it seemed so similar to olive oil I couldn’t justify the price.

kb5.png

Missha – Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence Intensive Moist

This essence is supposed to be dupe of the SK-II Facial Essence so I really want to test it out.

kb6.png

3 CONCEPT EYES – Maison Kitsune Primer Setting Powder

The packaging of the Maison Kitsune collaboration is so cute that I want to own at least one thing from the collection. This powder seemed most useful to me but I did just buy one so I may consider something else like the Soft Cheek tins.

kb7.png

CLIO – Kill Cover Liquid Founwear Ampoule Cushion Special Set With Refill SPF50+ PA+++

This cushion foundation is meant to be high coverage and long-lasting. I just bought the Pony Effect Everlasting Cushion Foundation so I will probably order this when it runs out.

kb8.png

Etude House – Bling Bling Eye Stick

These eyeshadow sticks seem so affordable and a decent dupe for those expensive Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour. I’ve not tried an eyeshadow stick before but I feel like they would be so quick and easy to apply.

kb9.png

Innisfree – Skinny Waterproof Microcara Mascara

This has a lot of good reviews. The brush is so skinny that it seems foolproof to apply and good to get into the really small lashes. I think it could be used just for bottom lashes if the formula is more lengthening than thickening.

kb10.png

3 CONCEPT EYES – Mood Recipe Gel Crayon Eye Liner in Bonnie

I think this is fairly expensive for what it is but the colour Bonnie seems so perfect to me. A really nice warm light brown. Sometimes I buy cheaper eyeliners hoping for this sort of colour so I feel like I would save more money in the long run if I just spent more knowing I’d get the right shade.

Fresh Spring Beauty and Fashion

Spring is finally here in the UK and I’m feeling all things fresh and new. I feel drawn towards green colours – teal, seafoam and emerald. I’ve been buying plants and trying to spring-clean my apartment, packing away the blankets and displaying bunches of flowers. I hope you are all feeling as renewed as I am after the Easter break. Here are a few things that have caught my eye ready for the warmer months.

Recent K-Beauty Buys

kbeauty.png

Here are some of my recent K-Beauty purchases. Have you tried any and what did you think?

ETUDE HOUSE Sunprise Mild Airy Finish SPF50+
This is a repurchase. I’ve nearly finished my last bottle and needed a new one. It’s watery, light and best of all unscented.

PERIPERA Ink Airy Velvet in Legend Brown Red
I’ve been looking for a very light shade of brown mascara for such a long time. This might be a bit too copper toned and I’m not sure on the formula, but I thought it was worth a shot.

BENTON Fermentation Eye Cream
I saw so many glowing reviews about this product and I needed an new eye cream.

PERIPERA Ink Color Cara in Black Maple Road
This often gets good reviews and the colour, a sort of pinkish brown looks really nice. It is also supposed to stain the lips so hopefully it will last a long time before fading.

TONY MOLY 5-Layer Cotton Sheet 400pcs
I was intrigued by these incredibly thin cotton pads that double as mini sheet masks. This box had so many I thought it was the best deal.

PONY EFFECT Everlasting Cushion Foundation SPF50+ in Natural Ivory
I love watching Pony’s videos and I like that this cushion is super glowy. It also had a free refill which seems to be good value.

Treating Dry Skin

dry1.png

Since the beginning of December my skin started to be very dry. First it was allover my face but now I just have a few patches. I think it must be a combination of the cold weather and dryness from central heating. I found this happened when I went skiing last year; my skin was fine and normal before but as soon as we hit the Alps I was having to coat my face with the only face mask I brought (Origins 10 Minute Mask).

This time round I have avoided using a very stripping cleanser. I stopped with my Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser and switched to Burt’s Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleanser. The Burt’s Bees cleanser feels like a thick oil and has a warming sensation when you apply it. I remove it using a hot muslin cloth. I prefer to steam the product away rather than wash it as I feel a lot of water will make my skin dry out.

Next I recommend a sheet mask because of the sheer amount of serum they contain. I have a selection of Innisfree It’s Real Squeeze Masks, my favourite is probably the rice one. This I’ll leave on for as long as I can and then rub in the remaining serum. It leaves my face feeling so plump and hydrated.

Afterwards I still like using my 100% Rosehip Oil. I’m thinking of investing in the MV Organics Rose Plus Booster, can anyone recommend it? I’ll use my normal Embryolisse Nourishing Moisturiser and I’ve started to use a small bottle of Epaderm Emollient Cream that I rediscovered. I had been using it on a rash a few months back. At the beginning I used the cream all over my face but it is so rich it was making me break out so I wouldn’t recommend doing that. Now I just focus it on small areas of the face and it really has helped. I found it in the pharmacy area of Boots.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations. ♡

Sun in Winter

Living in England, the cold months seem to last forever. For a couple of weeks it’s fun to think about snow and wrapping up in scarfs with just a natural blush to the cheeks. But come the new year I’m aching for warmth and having that summery glow.

Bronzer is something I’ve always had trouble with. I’ve only used it properly in the last year as I found the ones I bought to be the wrong shade – that kind of brick-red that doesn’t look natural with my fair complexion. I’ve tried cushion and stick bronzers but they never last on me. I think I’m too low maintenance to bother with primers and setting sprays – I’m not convinced they do anything from the ones I’ve tried. I did really like the L’Oreal Cushion De Soleil Bronzer but it ran out so quickly and needed constant touching up.

Ideally the perfect powder bronzer for me would be affordable, not tested on animals, as natural and organic as possible – not containing a lot of harsh chemicals and of course that it works. Having great packaging would be a plus. Colour-wise, a muted cool brown with little shimmer.

New Year Beauty

In my last post I detailed my skincare and makeup routine. In this new year there are a few areas I would like to improve. If you have any recommendations please let me know.

My skin is fairly sensitive. I suffer from some breakouts but mainly just scarring after managing to improve my skin over the past year. I have dry patches and a few oily areas but on the whole it is quite normal. I am beginning to see some signs of ageing, light lines on my forehead, round my eyes, mouth and between my brows. I think I am doing quite well for 27 but I would like to use some more targeted products. Ideally I don’t like using harsh chemicals on my face and cutting down on them last year made my skin much healthier.

Morning Cleanse

As detailed in my last post I’ve stopped using water on my face in the morning. Currently I just use the Liz Earle toner. It’s nearly run out so I’ll probably try something else. My current options are Caudalie Grape Water, Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser, Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid and Aloe Vera Toners.cleasne1.pngFoundation

I tried a lot of foundations last year but my favourite was still the Bourjois Healthy Mix. I found the serum version to have very little coverage. I bought the Too Faced ‘Born This Way’ foundation but it didn’t blend well with my concealer. My new options are Yves Saint Laurent All Hours, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk and bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel.found1.pngEye Cream

I spent a lot of time last year trying to find a decent eye cream. I would like one that helps with ageing but I have heard different arguments for and against using it. I personally think there can’t be much harm in applying it, even if it can’t reverse time at least it will keep the area hydrated. I want to try Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream, Dr Dennis Gross Skincare’s Ferulic + Retinol, Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue and the Eve Lom Eye Cream.eye1.png
