At Home Hydrating Facial

I’ve wanted to have a facial in the past few weeks but decided to try and do it at home replicating what I’ve had done in the past. Although I don’t have the same massage techniques as a qualified professional, I feel that I could quite easily do a similar process. This way I can use the products I like and save the money I would have spent. This is the routine I have been implementing and it’s been working well so far, let me know if you have any tips.

Makeup Removal

I will often start by removing the bulk of my makeup usually with a facial wipe. Sometimes I will use a facial oil if I am not using waterproof mascara. The oil is great for also using a massage technique that can help circulation because of the slip is creates on the skin.

The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil 200ml
Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Oil with Coconut and Argan Oils 177ml
DHC Deep Cleansing Oil 200ml
Simple Facial Cleansing Wipes – Pack of 6
Facial Massage Jade Roller
Méthode Jeanne Piaubert Stimuloval Roller
The Body Shop Wooden Handle Facial Massager

Cleanse

I like to do a second cleanse to ensure all the makeup is off my skin. My favourite is a hot cloth cleanser that you steam off. This opens the pores and makes the skin extremely soft because it is not stripping like a gel-type cleanser. I like to use muslin cloths, the texture provides some exfoliation too.

Ren Rosa Centifolia Hot Cloth Cleanser
Burt’s Bees Soap Bark and Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream 170g
Pai Skincare Organic Camellia and Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser 200 ml
MuslinZ Baby Muslin Squares (Pack of 6, White)

Exfoliation

To exfoliate I love using a brown sugar scrub. They smell amazing and once you’ve dissolved the sugar particles by gently buffing the skin it produces an oily residue that is hydrating and luxurious feeling. You can also do a facial massage at this stage.

Skinfood Skin Food Black Sugar Perfect Scrub Foam
Majestic Pure Brown Sugar Scrub 12 oz
Oatmeal & Almond Face Scrub with Crushed Walnut Shells – Organic, 100% Natural

Masking

I like to then use a mask. Depending on my concern I might use a sheet mask if I want a lot of hydration or on a regular day I will just use a relatively natural mask. You can use a clay based one for blemishes but they can be quite drying and may make the previous steps of the facial void because we are working towards building moisture.

TONYMOLY Pureness 100 Mask Sheet (Variety Set – 10 Sheets)
Garnier Moisture Bomb Pomegranate Hydrating Face Sheet Mask
Origins Drink Up 10 Minute Mask 100ml
Fresh Vitamin Nectar Vibrancy-Boosting Face Mask To Go 30ml

Oil

After removing the face mask I immediately like to use a facial oil in order to retain as much hydration as possible. I love rosehip oil because of its healing properties but the smell is not to everyones taste. There are a lot of other similar plant-based oils that are worth considering.

100% Pure Rosehip Oil 60ml
Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil 30ml
BeBarefaced Vitamin E Face Oil – Facial Vitamin C Night Serum With Hyaluronic Acid

Moisturiser + Eye Cream

The final step is moisturiser. I like to use a relatively thick one overnight. Eye cream is also an important step and you can tailor this to whatever concerns you have like dark circles or anti-aging.

Embryolisse Concentrated Milk Cream 75ml
Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream 60ml
Liz Earle Skin Repair Moisturiser
Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado 15ml

Dear, Klairs – Illuminating Supple Blemish Cream SPF40 PA++

This is a best selling BB cream in Korea. I had a free sample and was really impressed by it. It has good coverage and feels just like moisturiser when you apply it. It has colour correcting qualities and is also cruelty free.

kb2.png

By Wishtrend – Vitamin 75 Maximizing Cream

I also had a free sample of this and it’s like a gel consistency. I think this would be good for morning when I don’t want a thick cream. I think gel creams can be quite hydrating which was the impression I got from my sample.

kb3.png

Holika Holika – Piece Matching Nails Lacquer

I’ve not really heard anything about these but I liked the colours especially the light blue.

kb1.png

COSRX – Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser

This is supposed to be good and it’s quite affordable. It is described as a morning gel cleanser, possibly comparable with the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. I’ve been looking into gel cleansers because I want something light and refreshing in the morning and not too stripping.

kb4.png

The Face Shop – Rice Water Bright Light Cleansing Oil

In reviews this cleansing oil apparently works really well. Having run out of my The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil I am in need of a new one (The Body Shop one has awful packaging). I had a sample of the DHC Cleansing Oil but because it is olive oil based I wondered why it was so expensive. To me it seemed so similar to olive oil I couldn’t justify the price.

kb5.png

Missha – Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence Intensive Moist

This essence is supposed to be dupe of the SK-II Facial Essence so I really want to test it out.

kb6.png

3 CONCEPT EYES – Maison Kitsune Primer Setting Powder

The packaging of the Maison Kitsune collaboration is so cute that I want to own at least one thing from the collection. This powder seemed most useful to me but I did just buy one so I may consider something else like the Soft Cheek tins.

kb7.png

CLIO – Kill Cover Liquid Founwear Ampoule Cushion Special Set With Refill SPF50+ PA+++

This cushion foundation is meant to be high coverage and long-lasting. I just bought the Pony Effect Everlasting Cushion Foundation so I will probably order this when it runs out.

kb8.png

Etude House – Bling Bling Eye Stick

These eyeshadow sticks seem so affordable and a decent dupe for those expensive Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour. I’ve not tried an eyeshadow stick before but I feel like they would be so quick and easy to apply.

kb9.png

Innisfree – Skinny Waterproof Microcara Mascara

This has a lot of good reviews. The brush is so skinny that it seems foolproof to apply and good to get into the really small lashes. I think it could be used just for bottom lashes if the formula is more lengthening than thickening.

kb10.png

3 CONCEPT EYES – Mood Recipe Gel Crayon Eye Liner in Bonnie

I think this is fairly expensive for what it is but the colour Bonnie seems so perfect to me. A really nice warm light brown. Sometimes I buy cheaper eyeliners hoping for this sort of colour so I feel like I would save more money in the long run if I just spent more knowing I’d get the right shade.

Have you tried any of these products and what did you think?

Long Lasting Lipliner Hack

This idea came to me as I woke up. In a recent post on here I raved about the long-lasting formula of the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink liquid lipsticks but how I thought the shade range wasn’t great. I loved how they last all day and that I didn’t need to worry about touching up my lip line – I am fussy about wanting a fuller looking shape.

I decided to use the Maybelline product as a lip liner – simply using a lip brush and applying the product precisely as if it were a liner. I used the shade Seductress – a browny nude. Then I went about using a different lipstick. This nude shade works with most beige/pink colours.may.pngTherefore throughout the day I kept the shape of my lipline in tack but only needed to reapply the lipstick. This is good for me for two reasons. One, if I had applied the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink all over it becomes quite thick and does start to bunch and come off in the middle of the lips. Using a normal lipstick means being able to apply a fresh coat. The Maybelline product is very difficult to remove. Secondly, I can choose a different lipstick shade that I prefer more.

This led me to think about applying the Matte Ink with only a lip brush all over and seeing if it looks better because of it being a thinner coat. I will have to experiment with this too.

Let me know if you tried my hack and what you think. 🙂

Recent Beauty Makeup Buys – My Impressions

These are some recent makeup purchases and my thoughts on them.

Pony Effect – Everlasting Cushion Foundation SPF 50 in Natural Ivory

I bought this a few months back. The shade I chose was perhaps a little on the light shade but depending on how much you apply you can fade it out so it pretty much matches. The actual cushion is quite hard so you really have to press your sponge into it (I use a Beauty Blender). The coverage is actually very good. I can apply it lighter if I want a natural look or really build it up. The long wearing formula is accurate. So often my foundations will have almost completely disappeared by the end of the day but I found this actually stays on. The high SPF is great too for summer. It came with a free refill which is good but with all cushions I worry about how much product is really in it.

Essence – Make Me Brow Eyebrow Gel Mascara in Blondy Brows

I bought this because I wanted to try a lighter brow mascara than my actual brows to see if it would lighten them and this was a very cheap option to test it out. For the price I am very impressed. It lightens them and provides some hold. Although there doesn’t appear to be much in the bottle as it is very small, I would probably repurchase it again.

Peripera – Ink Color Cara in Black Maple Road

I use this on my bottom lashes and I love it. I have ordered another shade because I think this colour isn’t that suitable on my top lashes. I would recommend this shade for people with ginger hair as the colour is a warm orange. The formula is really amazing, the best waterproof mascara I’ve tried. I’ve not seen any smudging. It is probably more of a lengthening than volumising formula. The price is great and I like the small dinky bottle.

Peripera – Ink The Airy Velvet in Legend Brown Red

This is so comfortable on the lips, it is like a watery liquid lipstick – a very unique formula. The smell is fruity but in a pleasant way. I have already ordered another shade called Dry Rose Brown because I like it so much. The shade I own is a reddish brown that probably doesn’t suit me that well just because I prefer more pinky shades. However I would recommend this for anyone to try.

Essence – Eyeshadow Box in In Love With Rose

I found this in a small shop whilst in the Netherlands last week and had to buy it because of the cute packaging. I have only used it once so far but the shadows are extremely buttery and I love all the shades. I am always loving glittery pinks. They are better applied with fingers than with a brush to get better pigment but I think for the price and packaging it is worth trying out.

L’Oreal Paris – Infallible Eyeshadow Paint in Nudist

This was an impulse buy that I hadn’t heard much about but the colour really drew me in. Nudist is a warm brown, perfect for everyday. Just the shade I am always looking for. This is such an easy product to use and great for lazy days. I apply it over eye primer, just swipe it on above and below the eyes and blend it out with a brush. I would say the formula doesn’t last intact all day on me even with primer. It does start to move around and crease but for the ease of use and the colour I would happily continue to use it and buy other shades.

FullSizeRender_3.jpg

Maybelline – SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in Seductress

I already have two other shades in this and I saw they had released new colours. I think the shade range is so off in general. All the colours are in my opinion terrible which is a shame because the product is so interesting. You apply the product and it lasts all day without having to touch up. It is great for me because I dislike having to touch up lip liner and I always worry about the shape of my lips not looking as full as I want. With this product it just stays there. I love it for days out when I may not be able to touch up my makeup or I just don’t want the hassle. I’ve not used any product as long wearing as this before. It does come off a bit in the centre of your mouth but in a nude colour you can’t really notice. The formula is very odd, you have to apply it and not touch your lips for nearly half an hour but they can remain a bit sticky all day. The smell is not great, a kind of cake-like vanilla scent. The colour I recently bought in Seductress is better than the other two I own in Loyalist (very pale nude) and Lover (dark mauve) but it is a very brown nude that I don’t love. I would recommend this to someone who wants a long lasting lipstick but I do think the colours are not great.

Boots Seventeen Makeup Haul – Closing Sale – First Impressions

Hearing that Seventeen – Boots teenage makeup line – was rebranding, I headed to buy a lot of what they were selling off. I didn’t expect to get so much but when the prices were all around £1.50 each I couldn’t resist. Most products didn’t have any testers so I was blindly buying hoping for the best. Here’s what I bought and my first impressions.

IMG_7483.JPG

All Out Pout – Fancy Free – £7.99 now £2.39
There was a small image on the package and I chose the pinks over the other orangey red set. The mini lip brush it comes with is quite decent. I’ve not had a lip palette before so I liked the idea of being able to mix various shades. Testing it I can see the colours are quite sheer, almost balmy and glossy in texture. There is no scent or taste which is great. I think I probably won’t use this much but it would be good for a comfortable lip look.

Stay Pout – It’s Complicated – £4.99 now £1.49
I initially liked the colour on the bottom of this lipstick but opening it I realised it was frosted. It reminds me of a 80s 90s Barbie lipstick and I doubt I would wear it as intended. I feel like I could repurpose it as an eyeshadow or blush. The formula seems very nice though, very comfortable and unscented. It has quite a stain when removing.

Stay Pout – It’s A Kiss Off – £4.99 now £1.49
This shade is better but still has some of the frostiness. It could work well for that metallic lip trend I’ve seen around. If you dab off most of the colour it looks quite wearble. Again quite a strong stain is left behind.

Mirror Shine – Belle – £4.99 now £1.49
They had a very used tester of this shade so I knew I would like the colour – a browny nude. I didn’t realise it was a balm, so essentially it is just a slightly tinted lipgloss. It’s not sticky though. I don’t usually wear this type of thing but with a lipliner I think I could make it work. The lipstick also contains a handy pull out mirror.

IMG_7484.JPG

Easy On The Eye – The Big Smoke – £7.99 now £2.39
I’ve been looking for a lilac eyeshadow for some time and saw this set had one. They are not very pigmented but I think if you used a wet brush the colours could really look nice. The colours are a mix of shimmer and matte. Four of the shades are actually balmy so could be used for a wet look eye, inner corner highlight or even as cheek highlight. It comes with a fairly good brush.

Define & Conquer Contour Kit – £5.99 now £1.79
The brown shade is a really nice tone. I’ve only swatched this so far so I can’t say if it suits my complexion. It’s a decent size and the lighter shade would be good for setting as I don’t think it is light enough to actually brighten my skin.

Skin Wow! Tan Liquid Glow – £5.99 now £1.79
I’ve been interested in these bronze glowy products for some time, ones you can mix with foundation or use as a base product. This caught my eye immediately. Testing on my hand it looks really good and just shimmery rather than glittery.

Skin Wow! Concealer – Medium – £4.99 now £1.49
This I didn’t really need but I’d not tried any concealer that really mimicked the YSL Touche Éclat. I’m actually quite impressed on my first try, the colour is just right and it blends well.

Instant Glow Cream Bronzer – It’s Glow Time – £4.99 now £1.49
I’m quite excited about this product. It was fairly cheap to begin with but the colour seems very summery. I would say it leans slightly yellow in tone. The consistency is very creamy, more so than the one I currently use which is a plus as I think it will drag less when applying on top of makeup.

Miracle Matte Pressed Powder – Natural Fair – £3.99 now £1.19
I bought this powder mainly because I actually needed some. The colour looks to be a good match and it should do the job. I forgot that I had a similar powder in the contour palette but for the price I’m not complaining.
